The time period between the ninth and fourteenth centuries is known as the "High Middle Ages" because of Europe's economic and political success due to the rise in Feudalism. This week we focused on the concept of Feudalism and how it worked with Manorialism to help strengthen nations like England and France.
While Feudalism has been a debated term among historians as a result of the inconsistencies as a system, it cannot be completely denied. Similar customs such as Counsel, Aid, Inheritance, Marriage, Homage, Fidelity, and Taxes are just a few of the entries that show the system of Feudalism. More importantly, was the success of England and France post the Norman Invasion of England in 1066. Kings such as Henry II of England and Philip II "Augustus" of France used the Feudal System to strengthen their monarchies and build their kingdoms. In addition, we saw the rise of the Christian Church in the High Middle Ages as a result of the success of Feudalism. The economic success of monastic orders, as well as the development in Canon Law gave the Church a hierarchal structure similar to a Feudal Kingdom.
Next week pay attention to how Feudalism impacted the Late Middle Ages. How does the Feudal Structure help explain the cause of the 100 Years' War? Lastly pay attention to collapse of the Medieval Church. Were these downfalls because of the inconsistencies in Feudalism, or is there something more pressing going on?
